Does the order in which you layer skin care products really matter?

the Q: does it really matter if you apply moisturizer before serum? Or if your SPF goes on last?
the A: YES. layering incorrectly can prevent products from working properly and render them ineffective. for example, applying a cream before a serum would create a barrier, not allowing the serum to penetrate into the skin. the rule of thumb is to always apply thinnest to thickest *remember to save you active ingredients (i.e. retinol, AHAs, BHAs, etc) for nighttime* if you use an oil, always save it for last as they create a barrier on top of the skin to seal & lock in ingredients

HOP APPROVED / super sensitive shield SPF30 x @dermalogica

a few things we always look in an SPF…
  • something that’s a broad spectrum ‘mineral formula’ and contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide- they’re the safest and most effective UVA/UVB filters and won’t clog your pores or cause an allergic reaction
  • an SPF of 30 or higher
  • a product that not only protects, but also benefits the skin
the super sensitive shield is ideal for those with sensitive skin types. it goes on sheer and is our go-to for the neck, chest and top of hands (anywhere we don’t want a tint). it also provides hydration and helps protect the skin’s lipid barrier

*always apply SPF after your moisturizer and pre-makeup*

healthy skin after 30

there comes a time when you have to realize you’re no longer in your early 20s and neither is your skin. we’ve both noticed a major shift since turning 30- hormones have been a battle, preservation has been a must and sun damage has been on high alert. those days of sleeping in your makeup, even just that once, are OVER

if you’re still doing the same routine you did in your younger years, ie: using st. ives scrub, a clarisonic, neutrogena anything, etc. don’t act surprised when it isn’t working in your favor anymore. as you age, your skin requires advanced products and treatments to fight the clock. your 30s are a turning point for the skin, and the time is now to up your game

the staples we feel every 30-something should be considering…

winter skincare

’tis the season for dry, flaky, irritated skin. as temperatures drop and heating systems kick in, most of us find ourselves in serious need of hydration *spoiler alert: layering on an extra heavy moisturizer is not going to do the trick*

cold weather is not your friend. as seasons change, certain adjuments need to be made in order for your skin to adapt. the reason you experience dryness during winter months is due to a lack of moisture in the air. as temperatures drop, so do humidity levels, which causes the air to become dry. even turning on your heating system robs the air of moisture, so it’s critical you’re going the extra mile to protect your skin from becoming dehydrated

while every skin type is different, these are our go-to winter skincare recommendations…

it’s a common misconception that if a product stings or tingles it must be working. the truth is, you’re most likely disrupting your skin’s protective barrier (designed to keep moisture in and irritants out). that tight, squeeky clean feeling after you wash your face is actually a sign of your skin crying for help, because it’s been stripped of its natural oils. when a product stings, it’s either too harsh for your skin or reacting to being combined with another product (ie: AHAs/BHAs and retinol). if your skin experiences the following symptoms after using a product, it’s time to toss it: redness, irritation, breakouts, dryness, and flakiness
*the only time a stinging/tingling sensation is appropriate is when it’s been administered by a skincare professional*
PS. those black masks that make people look like their in legit pain trying to peel them off… not ok
