HOP APPROVED / daily cleanse x HUM nutrition

the heavy hitters in this particular supplement are spirulina + chlorella (nature’s most powerful detoxifiers that help to clear your skin, liver, bowels, etc from toxins) + zinc (the go-to vitamin for preventing breakouts bc of its ability to control inflammation and reduce the effect of bacteria on the skin). this supplement is an absolute must for anyone suffering from hormonal acne or rosacea. brittany swears by its ability to clear her rosacea w/o prescriptions

how to use: take two capsules on empty stomach first thing in the morning. expect results in 4-6 weeks

how to deal with hormonal acne

i’ve tried writing this post at least a dozen times. it’s such a vast topic that’s still evolving for me. balancing hormonal acne is something that takes trial & error. as someone who never dealt with teen acne, i suddenly began having breakouts that would reappear every month in the same place, usually consisting of 2-3 along the chin. while my case was not severe, it was still a struggle and not one i was familiar with. the worst part is that they would linger, giving me maybe one cyst-free week a month. thankfully, i’ve gotten to a place where i rarely have a cystic breakout and when i do, it’s much less severe and gone in a few days

here’s what i’ve learned…

skincare myth: drinking more water can cure dry skin

chances are you’ve been told to “drink more water” in response to your skin feeling dry. while drinking water is crucial for your overall health, when it comes to hydrating the skin- not so much. drinking water is actually the least efficient way to cure dry skin and won’t fix your problem any more than a bath will quench your thirst. it hydrates the cells inside the body, but it doesn’t actually reach the outside layers of the skin (AKA the epidermis). put it this way, dry skin is an external problem and is best treated on the surface

what causes dry skin…

the reason your skin is dry is due to 1 of 2 reasons: the first is because it’s your natural skin type inherited by genetics. the second is due to environmental factors (low humidity, dry heat, sun, etc), harsh products, chemicals, etc. we wrote a post on how to tell the difference between dry and dehydrated skin here

how to use face oil

if you see someone with perpetually glowing skin, odds are they’re using a face oil. we use oils in numerous ways from cleansing (more on that here), to nourishing our bod, as a primer for makeup, and at night for perfectly hydrated skin the next morning. it’s important to note that oil attracts light and therefore can make your skin extra sensitive to photodamage from the sun. for this reason, we prefer to apply at night when used as the last step in our routine. when used during the day, it’s only before makeup and in this order:

from the neck down

while we constantly talk about how we care for our face, we can’t neglect how we care for our bod. there’s nothing worse than seeing an older person with a youthful face and not the bod to match. your hands, neck, knees, etc. can all be a dead giveaway for your age, so it’s crucial you’re taking care of your skin as a whole …

is microneedling safe to do at home?

microneedling is an old-school treatment that has made a comeback as one of the most beneficial anti-aging and skin rejuvenation treatments out there; giving anyone with acne scars, large pores, and stretch marks, a glimmer of hope. personally, we LOVE to perform this treatment on clients & are often asked if it’s safe to do at home (with a device known as a dermaroller). before becoming medical aestheticians, we tried the at-home method and cringe at the very thought of the damage we might have done! at the time, we didn’t have the proper education & understanding of how both methods work. while we’re always looking for cost/time efficient methods that can be done safely at home (such as face shaving), this is not one of them

here are the facts…
