the difference between oil and water-based skincare products

oil is making big moves in skincare, but is it worth the hype? considering we use it in everything from cleansing to sealing in moisture, we vote YES. however, we're not suggesting you replace your water-based products with oil-based ones. after all, water is the ultimate hydrator and essential for ALL skin types

when it comes to maintaining a flawless complexion, water and oil go hand-in-hand. water is what keeps your skin hydrated and plump, but it won’t stay that way if there's no oil to protect it from evaporating, so you need both to stay balanced. remember: because oil and water don’t mix, water can’t get through a layer of oil, which is why moisturizers/oil-based products should always be layered on top of hydrating/water-based products to seal them in

how to tell the difference between oil and water-based products...

water-based products simply mean that a product uses water as a medium to deliver ingredients. they're typically lightweight, gel-like and bouncy. certain "water-based moisturizers" may still include oil to prevent evaporation, so if you have oily skin and are looking for an oil-free moisturizer, make sure that it contains humectant ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, peptides to help lock in moisture and keep the skin hydrated

cleanser: firming cleaner | serum: HA intensifier | moisturizer: face lift

oil-based products same as above, except they use oil as a medium to deliver ingredients.  if the first ingredient on the label is oil or if there is a higher concentration of oil than water, it's classified as an oil-based product. please note: they’re NOT formulated to hydrate the skin but rather to create a protective coating over the surface to retain moisture and strengthen your lipid barrier (the outermost part of your skin).

cleanser: pre-cleanse | moisturizer: collagen deep cream | face oil: moisture reset

how to apply

always apply water-based products first, followed by your moisturizer/oil-based products. this way, you’re adding hydration to the skin and then ensuring it stays put throughout the day *if you use a face oil at night, apply it on top of your moisturizer**we also like to use face oil as a primer before applying makeup for a dewy, glowing finish*
