we are huge fans of this skincare ingredient

one of the most well-known skincare ingredients on the market happens to be one of our most beloved. whether you're an expert or a novice, you're most likely aware that Vitamin C is beneficial for the skin, but may not know why it should be a staple in your routine. we're giving you the short & sweet on everything you need to know about this must-have ingredient...

TYPE OF INGREDIENT: antioxidantMAIN BENEFITS:

  • prevents premature aging- your skin is constantly under attack by environmental aggressors such as pollution, smoke and the sun. these daily aggressors increase the number of free radicals in the air, which leads to collagen & elastin breakdown (AKA accelerated aging). antioxidants, particularly Vitamin C, are your greatest defense weapon when it comes to protecting your skin. they work by neutralizing free radicals before they cause damage. in other words, they prevent premature aging and keep your skin cells healthy
  • corrects uneven complexions- Vitamin C is also known as the "brightening antioxidant" because of its ability to correct uneven complexions by inhibiting tyrosinase (an enzyme that stimulates melanin production). it helps lighten unwanted brown spots without altering normal skin pigmentation and prevent future ones from forming
  • stimulates collagen production- Vitamin C is the only antioxidant proven to stimulate the synthesis of collagen, which helps produce firmer, more youthful-looking skin

WHAT TO LOOK FOR:  the best way to implement Vitamin C into your skincare routine is through a serum, because they're more effective than creams. look for one that contains pure ascorbic acid (also known as L-ascorbic acid) as it's the most stable form of Vitamin C and has been proven to be the most effective at penetrating the skin barrier*pro tip* Vitamin C increases it's effectiveness when combined with other antioxidants such as vitamin E and ferulic acid (hello SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic), consider it extra strength protection against free-radical damageHOW TO USE: apply vitamin C serum in the morning after toner (while the skin is still damp), giving it 30-60 sec to absorb before moving on. follow with your hyaluronic acid serum, and top with moisturizer + SPF. most skin types can tolerate daily use, but if you have hypersensitive skin, start by using every other dayDON'T USE WITH: benzoyl peroxide as it can oxidize Vitamin C, rendering the effects of both useless

*our favorite ways to get an extra dose of this powerhouse ingredient is to apply it immediately post our facetune laser treatment as it creates open channels to allow the Vitamin C to penetrate deeper into the dermis
